Ghosts Season 4, Episode 20, “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago” Spoilers Ahead
Ghosts delivers a roaring good time in “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago,” as it weaves emotional beats with a glorious high. Stephanie is back, giving Odessa A’zion an arc to shine in one of the character’s most heartfelt episodes as her prom date has returned to Woodstone. (He’s the mayor? It’s not a dog? Next town over.)
It’s also 420, and though the roof at Mahesh has been replaced since Chris’ fall, they don’t have the expedited permit to open, so Jay’s putting his foot down to fight Stephanie’s hesitations to trust the mayor.
Ghosts Season 4, Episode 20 Is a Blast
Almost every episode of Ghosts can be wildly hilarious, but so much about this one is about every little thing that we can continually quote. And it’s about the performances. What works with network television comedies that are given 22 episodes is the fact that we can play with beats where characters accidentally get high for the first time during an otherwise important day for Sam and Jay as business owners. We can include something this hilarious, and it’ll never feel wonky or out of place.
Simultaneously, the show is circling back to a relationship that’s mostly been on the back burner for a while now, giving Alberta another chance to see Pete in a new light. Is this something that’ll actually become canon, or are we going to keep playing the “will they/won’t they” game? Genuinely, it’s hard to tell. Yet, Pete recounting the experience to Thor and Alberta doing the same to Hetty is something I’m going to think about for a long time. The sharp dialogue and the utter disbelief make that scene everything I’ve needed it to be without even realizing I needed it. Plus, the five of them in the car? We need to see these characters high more often. Immediately.
In addition to the moments of levity, we get another beat of heart as a different part of Stephanie’s story comes to life. While our teenage basement ghost might not be one of the main ones (Jay said it, too), she’s still a delight, and it was fascinating to see the return of her prom date. Only Ghosts Season 4, Episode 20, “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago,” forces Stephanie to lie at first.
Still, like in last week’s “Pinkus Returns,” we learn that Stephanie’s role in her boyfriend’s life is bigger than she once thought. While she held on to the grudge that he fell for her best friend immediately after her murder, what she didn’t realize was that grief bound them together. This isn’t similar to Carol cheating on Pete, so perhaps it makes it easier for Stephanie to feel more at ease. And despite her means of trying to jeopardize the situation, what she also learns is that they’ve named their daughter after her, bringing back the gorgeous impact of a quiet legacy as a prominent theme within the show.
As an episode that’s more straightforward with all that it shows, Ghosts Season 4, Episode 20, “I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago,” is a great reminder of how well the series can continue layering each character. Every backstory is rich with nuance and handled with care, making the revelations feel so right and earned. Stephenie doesn’t come around often, but it’s always gripping how there’s something so nostalgic every time we see her. It’s also hilarious how desperately the ghosts want her to like them.
Stray Thoughts
- “He has a name!” Will Isaac ever get over Chris? Someday.
- “She’s not even one of the main ghosts!” omg, Jay.
- High Pete is so wild. I can’t.
- Alberta 👀 babe?!!!
- “Girl dad, I get it now.” This is such a Trevor thing to say now, I can’t even deal with it. But also, Hetty and Trevor basically parenting Stephanie quietly is everything to me personally.
- “What’s a lab partner?” Rebecca Wisocky’s delivery of this line is going to remain rent-free in my mind for ever.
- “You leaned?” “I leaned!”
- PETE THE HAND. WHY. WHY.
- WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT THE WOLVES?!!!
- “Wait, be honest. Does everybody here hate me?” I howled the first time I heard this line.
