We Can’t Stop Thinking About the Wicked: For Good Trailer

Good news! After months of speculation, the first Wicked: For Good trailer made its official debut on June 4. Following one-day-only special screenings of the first Wicked movie, the trailer dropped in theaters and online. It may be just over two minutes long, but we’re already obsessing over every frame! Here’s everything we noticed (and wondered about) in the Wicked: For Good trailer.

Elphaba and Glinda Meet Again

In Act 2 of the musical Wicked, it’s heavily implied that Elphaba and Glinda don’t see each other again until the fateful throne room scene. More on that in a moment. But the Wicked: For Good trailer is held together with a through-line of what appears to be a totally new scene.

In the first seconds, Ariana Grande’s Glinda peers out on her balcony, where Elphaba lurks. “Elphaba Thropp, I know you’re out here. Now come in, before the monkeys spot you,” she says. Later in the trailer, we see the witches in what seems to be the same scene, sitting on a swing together. “Think of what we could do — together,” Glinda whispers, echoing Elphaba’s plea from “Defying Gravity.” The scene appears a third time with the pair sitting amidst glittering pink light, hand in hand.

Some New Additions in the Wicked: For Good Trailer

The biggest change, of course, is the addition of Dorothy in person. It’s long been rumored that Dorothy would make an actual appearance in Wicked: For Good, and the trailer seems to confirm it. A few brief shots show Dorothy’s feet in the Silver Slippers, the Wizard of Oz quartet headed down the Yellow Brick Road, and the famous scene where the Wizard demands the Witch’s broom. In that last one, the Wicked: For Good trailer gives us a glimpse of the Lion’s face — but deliberately avoids showing us any of the other three.

There are also some smaller changes. Glinda dances with Elphaba and the Wizard in what looks like “Wonderful” — a song belonging only to Elphaba and the Wizard in the stage version. Elphaba flies through the sky, writing a message of “Our Wizard Lies.” Fiyero and his guards seem to close in on Elphaba in the forest at one point. And, where the stage show sees Elphaba’s return disrupt Glinda and Fiyero’s engagement party, it seems the movie version will have the actual wedding interrupted instead.

We also know there will be two new songs in the movie. Although they’re not heavily featured in the Wicked: For Good trailer, there’s a brief moment at the start that sounds like an unfamiliar riff from Erivo — possibly belonging to Elphaba’s new song? Also, exciting news: that shot of Elphaba and Glinda in a field during their Shiz days is in the trailer once again. Could that much-discussed deleted scene make its way into Part 2?

Iconic Songs and Lines

It’s not all new material. The Wicked: For Good trailer also features plenty of much-anticipated music and beloved lines. We hear (and briefly see) Cynthia Erivo’s take on “No Good Deed.” Elphaba’s big Act 2 breakdown song is sure to be a powerhouse performance, and we can’t wait to hear more!

Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero also appears, now stuck in his rigid role as captain of the guards. The trailer shows off one of Fiyero’s iconic scenes: turning his gun on the Wizard instead of Elphaba. We also get to hear Bailey deliver the quietly romantic “I have changed” line. Show of hands: who else is counting down ’til we get a glimpse of “As Long As You’re Mine?”

And, of course, there’s the title song. The second half of the trailer is underscored by Grande and Erivo’s delicate rendition of “For Good,” the song that makes every theatre nerd cry. “You’re the only friend I’ve ever had,” Elphaba says, in a line directly from the musical. “And I’ve had so many friends! But only one that mattered,” comes Glinda’s (also verbatim) reply. I’m sobbing already, guys!

What We Don’t See

  • No sign of Marissa Bode’s Nessarose, who plays a small but pivotal role in the events of Part 2.
  • Also, no sign (technically — IYKYK) of Ethan Slater’s Boq.
  • “No Good Deed” and “For Good” make up the bulk of the trailer’s score. That means no glimpses (yet) of other beloved Act 2 songs like “Thank Goodness” or “As Long As You’re Mine.” Not surprised at the latter, but I am surprised “Thank Goodness” didn’t play a bigger role in the first trailer!
  • Similarly, although we see a quick shot of the mob coming after Elphaba, “March of the Witch Hunters” isn’t heard at all.
  • In contrast with Part One, it’s a darker trailer, both literally and metaphorically. There’s not much humor on display. That’s a good representation of the material, too. While Act 1 of Wicked combines the college comedy of the Shiz era with growing dread, Act 2 is a darker, more emotional tale, and it looks like the movie adaptation is following suit.
