Can we light a candle or two? Maybe start a prayer circle after watching and dissecting every frame in The Gilded Age Season 3 trailer? We knew that the third season would deliver more angst because of where we left the characters in the Season 2 finale, but the trailer has us stress-eating ice cream before noon and trying not to cry into our coffee.
Julian Fellowes isn’t known for romance, nor is he known for happy endings. Still, a small part of us hoped that, if nothing else, the marriage between Bertha and George Russell (Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, respectively) would stand the test of time and any obstacle, especially given what they had experienced before. Now, trailers can also be deceiving, so there’s a good chance that what we’re getting isn’t as bad as what we’re imagining.
But the word divorce is a big one to throw around when it comes to these two, and it’s an especially big thing to question when we know that the one thing George Russell won’t compromise on is Gladys’ happiness. Now, the word can also be representative of another couple, sure. In a great season, that’s exactly what would happen. But no one can fault us for being stressed, given everything, right?
In most other ways, The Gilded Age Season 3 trailer is pretty entertaining, featuring what may be love blooming in a different corner for Peggy, the perfect amount of snark for Agnes van Rhijn is still present, and we even get a few Marian and Larry crumbs. It’s lush and exciting, and it delivers the promise of a thrilling season, no matter what’s ahead. Again, we’d still prefer to light some candles in hopes that the “d” word is just to throw us off. For now, though, we’ll keep replaying it just to feel something. We’ll also be fixating on the words society isn’t known for its logic, questioning how that’ll continue to play a part in unraveling the season’s plot.
