As a scaredy cat, The Addams Family has never once freaked me out. Despite not being a horror fan, the mysterious and oddly quirky family has actually been a nostalgic comfort since I was young, so no part of the gothic lore has ever been scary, despite how many things actually freak me out. And in its debut season, Netflix’s spin-off series isn’t that scary either, but Wednesday Season 2 pushes beyond the comfortable horror and moves toward a spot that can be freaky for some scaredy-cats.
The first six minutes of the season that dropped earlier this year are a lot different from what the actual first half of the season turns out to be, and that alone can be jarring. I thought we’d be diving into this idea of serial killers that resemble humans, but Wednesday Season 2 explores a lot more supernatural elements.
As mentioned in our post about whether Sinners is scaredy-cat friendly or not, it really depends on what the individual finds discomforting. I’m not a fan of distorted human faces, so generally, anything related to extremely terrifying depictions of vampires or zombies isn’t my jam. I can watch shows like The Walking Dead, but I end up looking down more than I look at the screen. More so, I find myself disgusted by all the squelching than I find myself terrified.
However, with Wednesday Season 2, it’s a little more complex than the generic zombies. If you’re somebody who finds slow-revealing shots of someone in a state of confinement, then the sophomore season is indeed scarier. This is especially the case for the fourth episode, “If These Woes Could Talk,” as characters escape from the confinement they’re in and begin running around trying to escape. There are a lot more jump scares, even as the scenes give viewers easy cues to see when they should start looking away.
For what it’s worth, it’s not too scary not to watch. But it’s certainly a season to tread a bit lightly around.
