Because I’m an absolute scaredy-cat, I’m naturally not a horror girly, not even a little bit. But I have, and always will be, an Addams Family girly, so despite how creepy Wednesday gets, I’ll likely still be seated. And the first six minutes of Wednesday Season 2 are extremely creepy. (Child’s play—pun intended?— for some real horror aficionados, I’m sure, but creepy to me. Dolls are just…yeah. No, I’m okay. I’m good.)
In the first six minutes of the show’s sophomore season, the titular character walks through the airport with every weapon imaginable packed onto her person. Typical. Of course, Wednesday would do that. But Wednesday Addams would also get more pissed about the fact that Thing packed a 3.5lb tube of sunscreen. But that’s not all we get—what we learn in the first few minutes is that since the show’s debut season, Jenna Ortega’s character has enhanced her psychic powers, and she is using them for good. In this case, she’s using her newly honed abilities to track a serial killer that she’s known about since she was a kid. Yet, the only problem is that it’s clear every time she taps into said psychic abilities, her nose bleeds, and by the end of the short clip, Thing is now fully aware of it, too.
Said serial killer, played by Haley Joel Osment, doesn’t know what’s coming for him, given everything Wednesday is capable of, but it’s easy to wonder if the writers would use his role to play on the idea of ghosts. Even if people haven’t seen The Sixth Sense, there’s a chance that they know of the show’s plot twist and who plays the role of the little boy in the film. Supernatural elements aren’t uncommon in the show, so can it be?
While we can’t do a typical scene breakdown with the small amount of context we have in this scene, what’s evident about this season so far is that we’ll likely watch the show push Wednesday to her limits. If Season 1 was about uncovering the secrets of Nevermore Academy, then something tells me Season 2 will focus more on deconstructing exactly what the character needs to feel satisfied and happy.
Dolls are a crucial part of every kid’s childhood, whether they’re a Wednesday or an Enid (Emma Myers). So, interestingly, the use of them in the Wednesday Season 2 opening sequence hints at what we can uncover about the childhood woes of our favorite girl. Will the dolls help her? Will they harm her? How will she be when she keeps pushing herself to the limit? The nosebleeds she keeps getting are likely also a big deal, so it’ll be riveting to see how this new adventure unfolds and also how long Thing will keep it a secret.
Wednesday Season 2 will be split into two parts, with Part 1 airing on August 6 and Part 2 airing on September 3, exclusively on Netflix.
