The People We Meet on Vacation Trailer Delivers on All Fronts

You know that scene in The Holiday when Cameron Diaz’s Amanda Woods plays back the trailer they made, and everyone gets super excited? That’s what it feels like watching the People We Meet on Vacation trailer, and I hope that everyone involved in making it is extremely proud of themselves because I legitimately can’t remember the last time a trailer made me feel this much.

If I weren’t already invested in the story because I’m a fan of Emily Henry’s book, I’d be running to the nearest bookstore to buy a copy, and I’d still be replaying the trailer at least once every hour because it’s that good. It’s a true rom-com trailer in a way that feels effectively nostalgic and modern. Familiar and comforting. We already knew that Emily Bader and Tom Blyth are shaken straight out of the book because of the small teaser trailer, but how this official trailer captures the essence of Poppy and Alex’s relationships is something else entirely.

It’s already obvious it’s going to be a five-star movie, and I would’ve said that even if I wasn’t already a fan of the two of them, because the small beats in the trailer showcase plenty. And we have so many astounding moments that every hour, my brain fixates on something else because the depth is already palpable. It’s all there.

Their opposite personalities. Brief beats of jealousy. The longing stares. The ridiculous jokes only they get. The way Alex’s sincerity shows us the cracks in his heart when he says, “Because I know you.” The way every single one of Poppy’s fears is on full display when she says, “You’re my friend. My best friend.” The weight of all their emotions burns through every instant, promising a movie that’s actually going to have a lasting impact beyond the single weekend it premieres during.

Book-to-screen adaptations are always hard because it’s impossible to fit in every detail and ensure that the emotions stick. But in the hands of the right screenwriter (Yulin Kuang) and the right director (Brett Haley), it has the potential to be its own breathtaking property. We know there will be changes, but the People We Meet on Vacation trailer makes it abundantly clear that there’s immense love and care behind this production.

Everyone behind the scenes wanted to ensure that the story would hit the landing, and it will. It’s so obvious it will. Plus, to think that these are all mere moments in a whole film that’ll hit twice as hard? What a rare, beautiful treat to bear witness to.

No one’s ready for it, truly.
