ElliMax Chats in Wild Cards’ ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Life)’

Max and Ellis in Wild Cards Season 3, Episode 2 'Quite Playing Games With My Life'

Welcome to ElliMax Chats, a column dedicated solely to highlighting Cole Ellis and Max Mitchell’s interactions during the latest episode of Wild Cards

A select few people will get me when I say that the latest episode of Wild Cards is basically an adult version of Lizzie McGuire. No, I will not explain any further. But off the heels of the season premiere, it does a better job of showing where both Max and Ellis mentally are while still keeping a wall of questions between them.

A narrative like a new girlfriend after the kind of arc we get in “Sunrise Sunset” isn’t something that generally works for me because it always feels like it comes out of left field. Sure, it makes sense, but what purpose does it serve exactly when viewers are typically invested in the main pairing already? And while we can still be confident of the fact that Max and Ellis are endgame, this blunder can also potentially lead to better things for them. It can work to their benefit, even if it doesn’t exactly feel right at the moment.

The “coworker” comment stung for a beat, but thank God, the writing immediately flips the script to ensure that Max confirms to Ellis that he’s not just a coworker. He’s a friend. But even that friend comment is so wonky considering what they are to each other and that they’ve kissed. The fact that she once promised him that she’d be his cricket, but she’s also keeping things from him in the same way he’s keeping things from her is oddly sad, too.

There’s no rift or anything between them, but there’s a strange wall that they’re almost ignoring because it’s so easy to be in each other’s lives. It’s easy to be friends, and it’s easy to work together, so the tension and time apart haven’t changed anything except for the obvious. It hasn’t made them any less comfortable around each other despite Max’s mother’s return and Ellis’ girlfriend almost standing at our throats as viewers.

I imagine that Ellis and his girlfriend would potentially break up amicably because if she somehow turns out to be an untrustworthy person, it’s going to make it significantly harder for him to trust anyone, and that includes Max. It’s also not going to be easy, given how little he knows about her mom, because this isn’t something she can open up to him about. She has to keep him in the dark, and this is also another factor that’s going to complicate the trust they’re continuing to build.

It’s riveting in a lot of ways to keep the angst alive until they hopefully get together for good, but Wild Cards Season 3, Episode 2, “Quit Playing Games (With My Life),” doesn’t give us much that’s solely concrete.
