Ghosts Season 5, Episode 11, “The Others” Spoilers Ahead
Ghosts returns with a mostly hilarious episode that honors the show’s found family and gives Sheila Carrasco ample room to shine as Flower. “The Others” is a mixed bag of sorts, with everything happening between Trevor and Patience after “It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol,” but apart from this, the reminder of the lengths Sam and Jay will go to protect the ghosts is something to admire.
It feels especially poignant because the episode also calls back “The End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About,” which thoughtfully showcases character growth for Flower in a manner that fully sticks the landing. It’s been a minute since we’ve watched our favorite hippy shine in this capacity, and every minute of it is worth appreciating.
Ghosts Season 5, Episode 11 Finally Brings in The Others
I really wish that episodic stills hadn’t spoiled the detail that The Others would be Bruce and members of Flower’s former cult, because that could’ve been such a wildly hilarious plot list, but it still works to provide the backstory necessary that points out the fact that Flower initially wanted to leave. It’s also riveting to know that apparently none of them tried coming out of the dirt after learning that Patience could? But that’s neither here nor there.
In an episode where Sam and Jay are once again supposed to do their own thing, the ghosts have other plans. It’s also beyond ridiculous at this point that these two probably have the coroner on speed dial, but that’s a narrative inclusion only Ghosts could nail. And credit where it’s due, how this show continues to make me so nervous only to subvert expectations in the best way will always be a detail because respect, because for a while, I was actually concerned Flower had rejoined, and it’d take a few episodes to fully get her out again. (Guys, I think TV has actually broken me a little.)
It’s incredible to have a reminder of “Holes Are Bad” as well, with the proof that the ghosts will continue giving all that they can to free one of their own from a suffering worse than the little perguatory they’re stuck in at Woodstone Mansion. In more ways than one, this arc within the episode works because of the parallels drawn to different episodes that aptly remind us of how far these characters have come in the five seasons we’ve known them. It especially works to provide great comedic relief when the double crossing occurs in an organic manner that still allows Flower to remember that the friends she’s surrounded by will perpetually be here for her, even while she momentarily forgets.
It’s also wildly hilarious that “The Others” finds ridiculously appropriate use of Jay’s metal detector, with the supposed meteor rock, while still allowing these two to go on vacation after everything. In a world where there’s something truly horrific every day, it’s worth recognizing how a show like Ghosts continues to be a light in its gorgeous reminder of the power of community. This isn’t a message to take for granted, nor is it one that I ever want the series to tire of because it’s exactly what we need every time.
What On Earth Is Happening With Patience and Trevor?
In what would’ve otherwise been a perfect episode, Ghosts Season 5, Episode 11, “The Others,” gives us the most confusing set of scenes between Trevor and Patience. The growth that Trevor has had to go through to get to a place where he can be loyal and steadfast is, in large part, because of the relationship he found in Hetty and later in his career. It’s because it’s who he’s always been by default, too. We can also recognize that becoming a father has brought out the best of him in monumental ways, too.
But some of the dialogue in this episode is questionable when he’s rejecting one woman because he might potentially have feelings for Patience, and not because it’s the wrong thing to do? It’s somewhat unclear exactly what’s happening between these two and why we’re even dragging it further beyond the comic relief of their initial hook-up. Absolutely no one wants to see Patience get hurt, but she clearly is, so where is this relationship going to go if Trevor doesn’t want to hurt her? In addition, it’s strange that Patience’s belief in Trevor and the statement that she’ll never leave him is something he believes is the nicest thing anyone’s said to him. Beyond all that we’ve had before? It feels…off, but generally, the Ghosts writers are easy to trust, so I really hope this arc gets resolved sooner than later.
Stray Thoughts
- Pete going to the bathroom for peace is actually so hilarious.
- Bruce scares me!?!??!
- I need that floral pillow next to Isaac on the couch.
- Stop, are we really never going to see Joan again?!! Don’t do this to me.
- The mention of Wawa took me out.
- Not me pausing the TV screen to see if Trevor was watching Heated Rivalry.
- I love nothing more than when Jay reminds us of everything he’s been through because his wife fell down some stairs.
