Scene Breakdown: Kate and Anthony Return With Baby Edmund in Bridgerton Season 4

Kate kisses Anthony's hand as they return in Bridgerton Season 4, Episode 6.

I didn’t expect much out of Kate and Anthony Bridgerton‘s return to Season 4, so while I always want more of them, at this point, I suppose it’s worth it if we get anything at all. And if nothing else, a moment that’s this soft (coupled with the newly released behind-the-scenes footage) is indeed a gift when Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey evoke as much as they do. More than anything, it’s worth celebrating that in the year of our lord 2026, we finally get to see Kate, Anthony, and little Edmund Bridgerton.

The shot gorgeously opens with Anthony looking at Kate like the answer to every question in the universe exists in her eyes, and she responds with a kiss on his fingers. Their interlocked hands and gazes continue to do the most, filling the gaps in the screenplay with the knowledge that their time in India has only strengthened and deepened their love. I’ve been critical about the trip to India and what it represents in the entire show’s messaging (and the logistics of it), but I’ll perpetually be grateful for all that Bailey and Ashley deliver in the small beats we get with them. The reminder that they know they’re safe with each other—content and fully adored.

In short, their alone time together is never enough, and that seems fitting for the audience as well because we can’t get enough of them either. For two people who’ve spent the majority of their days sacrificing their happiness for others, it’s deeply rewarding that we get to watch them bask in the serenity they get together. It’s rewarding to know that they know each other so intimately that the permanent state of contentment they feel around one another is always healing. And the importance of this scene with Kate, Anthony, and Edmund in “The Passing Winter” is that it’s so gratifying. It’s a moment of stillness in a season that consistently has us on the edge of our seats.

It’s a beat of contentment that fully underscores how finding love can be a beautiful, softening relief that’ll weave threads of gold into all the broken pieces of you. And that softness isn’t just something we see in them together, but Kate even mentions it later with the women, stating that motherhood’s changed her perspective on a number of things. (Don’t ask me how frustrating it is that she brings up her mistakes as if she has anything to apologize for when everyone’s piled everything onto her because I won’t shut up about it.) Still, their past apart was dark and grim, but the present with a doe-eyed baby giggling with his mother and father is a memory that’s going to stay etched in their hearts forever.

I fully admit that I’m greedy and will always want more, but the light in this scene is still too beautiful not to examine from all angles. There’s also something to be said about how every time we’ve seen glimpses into Anthony’s bedroom in the past, dark shades were not only present in the decor, but a weight eclipsed any sort of peace in his eyes. If nothing else, Jonathan Bailey has always been aware of the weight the character has carried, and he’s shown it to us at every chance he gets. In contrast, after starting a life with Kate, the darkness that once covered every room he’s stepped into is now replaced with light—an incandescent, undeniable glow.

So the fact that our first glimpse of Kate, Anthony, and Edmund is at Aubrey Hall, with a gleam all around them, is fully overwhelming. Because this scene and this decision feel right. It’s how it should be, and it’s lovely to have a physical reminder of the softness that now covers them both, bursting out of them like a newfound strength to carry. In many ways, Edmund Bridgerton is hope personified. This little baby isn’t just the next Bridgerton heir, but he’s a reminder that there’s life after loss. He’s a reminder that pain and loneliness and grief can lead to a love that’s so all-encompassing, the family you build together could be the very return light. (Maybe I’m extra soft these days because I’m now a first-time aunt, so I’m extra emotional about this baby—but he’s a special one, isn’t he?)

They all are. What August brings to the world for Simon and Daphne, as well as what little Elliot does for Penelope and Colin, is a joy that there are very few words for. These moments of quiet, illuminating joy are crucial to reminding us of how love heals and why happy endings matter in all the small moments shared after getting together.
