The Rookie Season 8, Episode 9, “Fun and Games” Spoilers Ahead
Welcome to Chenford Chats, a column dedicated solely to highlighting Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen’s interactions during the latest episode of The Rookie.
The Rookie doesn’t give us much in “Fun and Games,” but a minute of domestic bliss with Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen after some minor annoyances is sometimes everything. It’s especially an effective scene after last week’s “Grand Theft Aircraft” because we have confirmation that Tim is not only trying to up to his mom, but Lucy’s also in a group chat with them and forming her own relationship. (Despite Tim momentarily being…well, Tim. Things are looking up.)
More than anything, it’s a solid showcase that Tim is making concrete changes and trying his best to be a better communicator because his issues weren’t just with Lucy. Part of opening up his heart and letting his guard down means that he needs to talk to his mom and sister, too. He needs to unburden himself from all the pain he’s consistently carried, and he needs to ensure that he isn’t holding anything back or carrying everything on his own again. It also means he needs to stop avoiding things, no matter how small they seem. The more he does this, the easier it’ll be for him to communicate with Lucy. And it is.
Their scenes in “Fun and Games” might be brief, but the last one is the exact type of moment a couple like Chenford needs. We need the casual intimacy that’s packed with a compelling conversation that shows us how they’re making things work this time. The fact that he’s telling her about these conversations is enormous in its simplicity, and the fact that she’s also volleying with her own side is a good thing. Their partnership isn’t just something they need on the field, but these moments at home matter significantly, too.
This is what normal couples do at the end of the night. They debrief. They talk. They share things about their day, and in doing so, they get closer. Tim and Lucy are already so close in the fact that they work together, but opening up about seemingly ordinary topics is exactly what they were missing the first time, when small things turned into big things.
Plus, Lucy telling us about the group chat is fantastic because it shows us that she’s more than just Tim’s girlfriend to his family. She is part of their family—now, as her own person, and that’s significant for the next step they’ll hopefully take, which will lead to an engagement. The fact that she has the space to communicate comfortably with his family is also so different from how he’s been in the past; it’s a reminder of how everything is different with Lucy. We didn’t need the reminder, but still, it’s a good thing that The Rookie Season 8, Episode 9, “Fun and Games,” gives it anyway. I’ll take it.
Domestic bliss like this is exactly what adds depth and levity to an episode. It’s exactly what takes their scenes from understandable conflicts to moments of authentic joy and understanding. It’s exactly what reveals just how safe, comfortable, and deeply loved they are in this relationship.
