For the most part, Disney’s revival of Netflix’s Daredevil has been solid. The arcs make as much as they can for the small screen, and the performances are incredible, even if things aren’t always going the way we want them to. But after the cancellation of Wonder Man that made very little sense, surprisingly, Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, being the end of Matt Murdock’s run on the small screen, works.
It’s always better to know when a show is ending because it gives the writers a proper chance to wrap up the storyline than a cancellation that comes out of left field. We know that Marvel’s moving away from TV shows after VisionQuest and every other paused project that people have lost track of, so the news about Daredevil Season 3 isn’t all that shocking. But also, considering how Season 2 meandered with some narratives, like the romantic relationship between Karen and Matt feeling completely inorganic, it’s easy to want a little more out of this show before its last episode.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, where the news officially broke, the series will also be parting ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, and it’s unclear who’ll take the reins afterward. It bears noting that the show’s focus on characters outside of the titular vigilante is part of its downfall too. While Season 1 feels like a true ensemble that works to deliver a concise story, Season 2’s faulty pacing makes it harder to revisit.
Ultimately, while imperfect, Daredevil: Born Again is one of the better shows we’ve had in the MCU, and it’s great that we even got the chance to reunite with the characters as well as some of the Defenders. With news of the ending, however, it’s easy to hope that they’ll ensure we get the best possible outcome to wrap up the story as strongly as it began. A faulty middle can always be made stronger with a more rewarding ending, too.
