Ghosts Season 4, Episode 3, “Halloween 4: The Witch” Spoilers Ahead
Ghosts‘ fourth annual Halloween episode is another hilarious success that leaves viewers with a bombshell that could either be harmless or totally bonkers. Since Patience debuted her bloody powers last week while Sam’s dad visited, Jay cancels their Halloween celebrations to ensure everything goes smoothly with the Puritan ghost.
However, what Jay doesn’t anticipate is the fact that Patience decides Sam is a witch and she should be tried as one. And because the remaining ghosts are both bored and upset that Halloween is canceled, they agree to Patience’s trial until they realize their verdict turned Sam into stone. (Or so they think.)
Ghosts Season 4, Episode 3 Hilariously Forces Jay and the Ghosts to Team Up

One of the best parts of “Halloween 4: The Witch” is that we get a fantastic team-up between Jay and the ghosts. We already know that Pete basically travels with him on errands, but it’s great to see them all partner up to save Sam by having Trevor communicate with the iPad. More than anything, it’s a fantastic episode to showcase that even while he can’t see them, he fully trusts them, which ultimately reveals how far we’ve come in the last four years.
As a character, Jay harbors many more fears than Sam typically does, so it’s natural that he’d be so apprehensive about doing anything linked to Halloween with Patience around. But what’s so lovely is the collective panic every single character experiences when they notice the resemblance between Sam and the statue Hetty is unfamiliar with. A tremendous accomplishment from the Ghosts writers every year is that no matter how bonkers the Halloween hijinks are, they never feel forced.
Sure, we knew that Sam would be back, even if she had turned into stone, but the momentary fear Jay faces is so palpable it’s easy to be scared alongside him. It’s easy to wonder if she’d be the same or if the situation would change her, like the first accident that brought her ghost-seeing abilities. That’s thankfully not the case but the momentary anguish is an excellent writing technique that makes every moment in the episode gripping and exciting.
It’s also a major plus that Trevor has gotten much better at typing because time is sacred here. On the topic of something being sacred, Ghosts Season 4, Episode 3, “Halloween 3: The Witch,” emphasizes how sacred the bond between Sam and the ghosts truly is. We get moments during every season where this comes to the surface, but I especially loved seeing Hetty beg Patience to turn her back, noting that the only other times she’s done this was for cocaine. Hetty’s bond with Sam will easily be my favorite on the show because it’s a second chance for both characters to be a true family. And every time Hetty puts her pride aside to help someone in the house, we get clear signs of the incredible character growth she continues to experience.
Similarly, the Bridgerton homages work to hilariously highlight the significant changes in various dynamics with Patience’s Puritan ways. Women uplifting one another is more than in, and so are relationship dynamics that look and feel different. With this in mind and Patience’s choice to return to the others, I can’t wait to see how Isaac will begin his true growth. Patience’s presence kicks a lot into motion for him, but the real growth will come in her absence, where he isn’t forced to constantly fake things just to be on her good side. I wanted her to stay a little bit longer—maybe not with more Puritan ghosts—but it’ll be riveting to see Woodstone Mansion find a bit of normalcy.
