Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 8 Review: ‘Dear Jack’

Isabella and Bobbie see Isabella's boyfriend Jack walk into Happy's Place in Season 1, Episode 8.

After last week’s holiday special, “Ho-Ho-Howey,Happy’s Place delivers another heartfelt gem that continues to feel like a restorative balm on TV. “Dear Jack” is yet another lovely reminder that this tavern is a home away from home and a charming little place that’s all about acceptance.

When Isabella is struggling to break up with her long-distance boyfriend, Bobbie suggests that she write a Dear John letter to let him down easy and simultaneously show that she cares. However, Jack takes the message in a different way and instead moves to Knoxville to make their relationship one that doesn’t require distance. Elsewhere, a glowing review of the restaurant makes Gabby take an extra step to remind Emmett that he’s special, which then results in another endearing conversation.

Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 8 Is All About the Restaurant’s Heart

Since the “Pilot,” Happy’s Place has consistently gone out of its way to show how much these characters care about one another. There’s everything we see in “Don’t Sweat It,” followed by the lovely moments in “Ladies’ Night,” and likely everything else that will come, which continue to prove this show is about a found family.

Gabby is understandably irritated that her name is changed to Abby in the review, so she sets out to prove that she can also make a great burger like Emmett. In succeeding and getting Steve’s approval, they think they’re offended Emmett, but his focus is elsewhere.

Emmett is the last person who’d care whether people think he’s the heart of the restaurant or not. (Though I’d maybe argue that he did care about Happy’s opinion, and he most certainly cares about Bobbie’s.) But more than anything, in all his grumpiness, Emmett cares about the fact that they’re all taken care of because he knows how integral they each individually are to the tavern. So, he says as much to Gabby, Steve, and Takoda when they make him a “world’s best chef” display in the kitchen. He tells them how he believes they’re all the heart of Happy’s Place, yet it’s Rex Linn’s performance that solidifies a few extra words alongside the words.

When words like this come from a character like Emmett, they hit a little harder. Quiet people tend to be the most observant, and those with few words often hold the most inside. So, when Emmett says they’re a family—he means it. He ensures that they all understand they’re safe and valued, each with their own unique set of skills that contribute to making the restaurant an unquestionable hidden gem.

Bobbie and Isabella’s Sisterhood Continues to Tug on Heartstrings

The lovely development we get between Bobbie and Isabella in Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 8, “Dear Jack,” solidifies how their meeting continues to benefit them both beautifully. We get another wholesome reminder of what Bobbie’s relationship with her husband was like when she tries to convince Isabella that true love is worth waiting for.

This particular message is one that I’ll always welcome watching on my screen because no one should ever have to settle in love. No one should have to be okay with comfortable, if comfortable is also synonymous with fine. You can be comfortable and be in love simultaneously, but the former isn’t something to fight for, so I love the fact that Isabella takes this message to heart and follows Bobbie’s advice. It momentarily leads her astray but takes her to a place where she understands that her big sister is not only right, but she wholeheartedly wants what’s best for her.

With this, there’s something achingly lovely about how the episode concludes with everyone else wordlessly showing Isabella that they’re beside her. The small gestures of everyone coming to her with a hug or a shoulder squeeze, and even Steve’s wholesome poke, bring Emmett’s message to life gorgeously. The show’s heart glows in the way these characters appreciate one another, and for Isabella, who’s known so much loneliness, it’s deeply refreshing to see how beloved she is now.

Stray Thoughts

  • I need Steve to make it a running gag to call Gabby “Abby” or “Abigail.”
  • Also, I love how Steve and Takoda care so much about Emmett’s opinion.
  • Okay, but Jack was also a cutie.
  • I really love how this show continues to be so soft, even when people are (respectfully) making fun of each other. It’s so good for the soul.
