High Potential Season 1 Finale “Let’s Play” Spoilers Ahead
High Potential’s short debut season is a masterclass in procedural storytelling as it delivers one compelling episode after another while leaving us with a jaw-dropping season finale to hold us over until the fall. And thank heavens the show’s been renewed for a second season already because this would’ve been a brutal way to leave things off for good.
Cases left open, answers to the questions we’ve been asking for, and a slow, steadying development between the love story we’re all hoping to see more of. What more could a viewer want other than a time machine, perhaps to make Season 2 come faster? This season finale doesn’t just ensure that the first season leaves viewers wanting more, but in its means of telling an engrossing story, it makes the entire season shine.
Is Roman Alive in the High Potential Season 1 Finale?
We learn a few things about Morgan’s ex and Ava’s dad during the entire season and while we don’t yet see him, we do get huge news. In the High Potential Season 1 finale, viewers learn that Roman is indeed alive. Prior to Karadec delivering the news himself (which says a lot), Gio tells Morgan about a woman named Lyla Flynn, and then Kardec learns that she was an FBI agent who was killed in an unsolved murder. At the time, Roman was working as an informant for her.
There’s so much to appreciate about the fact that Roman is alive, and a large part of it has to do with what it’ll mean to Ava. Morgan’s belief that he would’ve never abandoned their family is not only proven to be true this way, but a teenage girl gets to hopefully understand her dad as a person who loved her. No matter the outcome, that’s what matters most in the scenario. And unless Season 2 pulls a huge twist on us where Morgan’s beliefs are wrong…well, that’d make things incredibly unfortunate.
Is There Hope for a Karadec and Morgan Romance in High Potential?
“Just please don’t trust him.” He might as well have said trust me instead. But what works so deliciously with the slow burn romance between Morgan and Karadec is that their beginning is so delightfully paced. We don’t need to rush things, and “Let’s Play” proves that. The quiet moments where they open up to each other, how they show up for one another, and the solid foundation they’re already building is no small feat. In the High Potential Season 1 finale, Morgan also opens up about her dad to Karadec, explaining how he shut her down, which then leads to Karadec’s realization that, for a beat, he did that, too. And while his reasons weren’t similar, he understands his own mistakes, which Daniel Sunjata shows to us with a single look that’s so good, it would’ve been enough to hold us over if we hadn’t gotten the slow dance.
And then, of course, there’s the Tom of it all, which continues to be riveting because it’s what’s going to give Karadec further reminders that he should step up. As a slow burn romance in a procedural, I still give it about four to five seasons before we see anything tangible between these two. However, we at least get a slow dance in this episode, and it’s the type of scene that I imagine we’ll end up referencing a lot when they’re actually together because it’s where Kardec makes it clear that she is his partner. The fact was cemented earlier last week, but his decision to declare that Roman’s whereabouts matter to him because they matter to her is crucial to showcasing how much they already care about one another. It’s all about trust between Morgan and Karadec, and the trust is fully there at this point.
