When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 9 Review: ‘Buried Treasure’

Henry Gowen in When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 9.

When Calls the Heart is nearing the end of its season, and “Buried Treasure” wraps up a few arcs while signaling that we’re about to swim through some bumpy waters. It’s an oddly calm episode for how high the stakes are at times, but it feels surprisingly right to approach it like this if we are getting some heavier content later.

With the help of Elizabeth, Henry, Allie, and Oliver, Nathan and Bill finally catch Sunny Garrison; Ava tells the truth and moves on from Hope Valley (sort of); Angela visits a new school, and Lucas finally makes a final decision on the national park.

When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 9 Continues to Make Edie and Lucas a Compelling Pair

In an unsurprising turn of events, I went from “Yes, they could be cute to “Actually, I need the show to make it canon” real quick. It continues to be thoroughly impressive how Miranda MacDougall and Chris McNally play off one another by ensuring that these early bits of content between Lucas and Edie are endearing. Yet, there’s also something beyond the edges, and so much of it continues to boil down to how they’re foils of each other. The fact has been undeniable since “Dance the Night Away” plus “The Show Must Go On,” and their dinner in this episode cements it in place.

Edie is no longer fighting against Lucas, even though she still has to represent her clients because the truth is out there. She’s given him everything he needs to know, and he’s shown her that he’s someone who can be trusted. Depending on how far McGinty will push back, Edie and Lucas both have an entire town behind them. They have Henry Gowen on their side—a man who understands better than anyone else what it’s like to play by his own rules. It’s a safer route today than it was yesterday because the trust between them can be the very catalyst that ensures she’ll be safe.

The connection between them is obvious now. They’re calling it a dinner between friends, sure, but the flirting doesn’t cease. The shy smiles and the silence stretching between them fill the space necessary for viewers to see that what’s developing here can be a good thing. It can be fun, flirty, open, and tender if they allow themselves the chance to be vulnerable with someone who can match their strides equally.

It’s engaging to continue seeing this development between them, but more importantly, it continues to be incredible how Lucas ensures that his decisions are for the people. In a time where politicians are vile and selfish and only in favor of billionaires in the real world, it’s great to see fictional characters pushing that boundary to remind viewers that politicians can be for the greater good of people. And in this case, Lucas certainly is. He’s doing everything he can for the kids and the people of Hope Valley by protecting the vulnerable, which, in turn, continues to make him an incredible character.

Fitting In

Angela confides in Minnie about being afraid in When Calls the Heart 12x09.

In When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 9, “Buried Treasure,” Minnie and Joseph take Angela to an orientation-esque visit at a school with students who also have visual impairments. My favorite thing about Angela continues to be her bravery, but that also comes with natural and innate fears that so many of us have when embarking on something new. It’s incredibly human and also a reminder that, at the end of the day, she’s just a teenager. It’s so easy to forget this fact on TV sometimes because the writing doesn’t always allow teens to simply be teens, yet thankfully, this isn’t the case on When Calls the Heart.

But when it comes to the school and how much Angela has wanted this, it also makes complete sense that she’d be afraid. There was no line more relatable than “I forget things, how am I going to take care of myself?” because likely every kid (and hi, yes, grown adults!) has felt this very peril. Yes, the students are kind, but there’s still that lingering fear of how jumping into something new can be so daunting. It can be terrifying. So, it’s moments like this where it’s so easy to appreciate how Minnie and Joseph are such great parents who know their daughter and know what she’s hiding from.

It makes the entire arc feel that much sweeter, especially because it comes from Minnie, and we know how nervous she’s been in prior episodes. To hear her encourage Angela to simply try because she knows that she’s brave enough to do so is everything a kid wants to hear, even when they’re terrified.

Go, Allie and Oliver!

Erin Kraków’s range as an actress always shows when she has to be silly because we know she’s capable of fooling criminals, so her means of confronting Sonny Garrison was so bad that it was actually comical. It’s why it’s clear that Krakow is great because she plays Elizabeth so well when she has to be awkward. And in that awkwardness, it’s Allie and Oliver who shine. It’s Allie and Oliver who manage to stall and make sure that Nathan and Bill find them.

It does feel like parts of this arc are resolved too quickly, yet we can be sure of the fact that the drama isn’t quite over on the show yet. No crook goes away that easily, and the fact that he’s seen Allie’s, Oliver’s, and Elizabeth’s faces makes me super nervous for what’s to come. Still, there’s a riveting message in this episode about how risks are necessary even when we know the outcome might not be sunshine and butterflies. It takes bravery to chase what’s scary, and it’s lovely to see it in various ways through the characters.

Stray Thoughts

  • Lee watching Edie and Lucas flirt is basically me. Their body language in the beginning was delicious!
  • Nathan and Elizabeth remain the cutest. I can’t deal with them and their little family.
  • I’m so glad that Ava isn’t as bad as we thought she’d be, but I’m also glad she’s on her way back and figuring her life out.
  • Elizabeth and Rosemary’s scheming will never not be entertaining.
  • I just really adore Henry’s character development. It still makes me so weepy! 🥹
  • I actually do need the show to up the stakes a bit, and I hope it won’t be solely in the finale right before we end for hiatus.
