Ghosts Season 4, Episode 15 Review: ‘The Bachelorette Party’

Sam, Flower, Alberta, Isaac, and Hetty in Ghosts 4x15.

Ghosts hasn’t dropped a bombshell like this since “Halloween 3: The Guest Who Wouldn’t Leave,” and it’s wild that we have to focus on other things and not spend most of our time screaming. With this, “The Bachelorette Party” interestingly becomes an episode that focuses intently on signs and exploring what it means for people—ghosts—not to project their fears and life’s mistakes onto others. It’s about letting things happen and taking the outcome of those occurrences one day at a time.

Alberta’s great grand niece returns to Woodstone, where Sam’s hosting her bachelorette party and Alberta is trying to stop the wedding because she doesn’t trust musicians. At Mahesh, Jay’s waiting for a review of his restaurant, but it turns out that Trevor posed as an investor and bribed the critic for a good review. And there’s a new ghost!?!

There’s much to say about the fact that Isaac called off his wedding because Deniz Akdeniz’s Chris, the stripper, awakened something in him during “The Polterguest” and how none of that could’ve gone anywhere until now. Up until that final second, it was doubtful if Ghosts would actually go down the route of killing Chris, but it did happen to Carol after all. Only this time, it isn’t a donut hole, but it’s falling out of a plane and right into Mahesh, where he automatically dies.

Given the fact that Akdeniz has a prominent role in ABC’s High Potential, it’s hard to imagine that he’d be sticking around for the long haul. And sure, not every ghost is on screen at all times, but unlike Carol, who we could often do without unless we actually need her, Chris seems to be here to serve a purpose. Whether he realizes it or not, he’s important to Isaac, and now that he’s dead, there are a thousand and one possibilities on where this story could go. At the same time, next week’s episode, titled “St. Hetty’s Day,” is likely going to be where we learn about Hetty’s ghost power, so could it have something to do with reviving Chris? Is there a chance that he doesn’t actually die? The questions are limitless here.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 15 Beautifully Examines Signs

There’s something so healing about signs, and we get a gorgeous example of it in “The Bachelorette Party.” Once Alberta screws up by using Sas to sabotage the wedding, she comes clean about the fact that her distrust toward musicians doesn’t just come from the heartbreak she experienced but the heartbreak she caused. Anytime the Woodstone ghosts open up about the mistakes in their past, another ghost elsewhere gets sucked off because there’s something so exceptional about how complex they each are—how many secrets they hold and heartaches they carry.

And for as many times as people mock Alberta’s humming power, the fact that it’s exactly what Alicia needs to understand that her fiancé isn’t cheating and she’s making the right choice is perfect. It not only gives the two women a chance to bond in a unique way, but there’s something so deeply wholesome about feeling like your dead ancestor is beside you during key moments in your life. Watching Danielle Pinnock and Ashley D. Kelley sing together is nothing short of glorious, showcasing the chops both women hold in a stunning manner.

More than anything, it’s the sheer heart in that moment and Alberta desperately wanting to ensure that Alicia doesn’t know the heartbreak she imagines she left someone with. It takes a large amount of bravery to admit when you’re the one who’s wrong, and it takes tremendous vulnerability to do something about it. So the fact that Ghosts Season 4, Episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party,” shows this to us through Alberta continues to be incredible. It’s also a testament to how well the series explores different arcs with its ensemble cast, making my heart squeeze almost every time.

There have been conversations recently about how the episodes are spread out, but Ghosts is, first and foremost, an ensemble show, and every narrative arc allows each season better pacing. We’re always in for a ride with these characters, and that’s where so much of its strength lies. With this in mind, how Alberta’s arc this week pans out is quite literally perfect for her, and if it is somehow tied to Hetty next week, then we’ve got something truly magical with the two besties.

The Real Review

The ghosts have once again pulled a Ratatouille and, in the end, gave us an Ego-esque review. Sure, it came with some bribery on Trevor’s part, but the truth of the matter is that the critic did actually enjoy Jay’s food, and coming clean about the investor’s money isn’t what swayed that. It’s the fact that all of this is a long time coming for Jay. He is a tremendous chef, so of course, that would come through when the moment presents itself. On a series that spends quite a bit of time exploring the idea of legacy and what that means, it remains so precious that we get to watch Jay make his mark right in front of our eyes.

It’s also precious that though the act itself is shady, Trevor wants nothing but the best for Jay. He wants him to shine. He wants him to have the best recognition and in this case especially, he wanted to do something good specifically to find a way to pay him back for his help in “The Work Retreat.” It’s a crooked way of doing so, but it’s still so wholesome still.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party,” jam packs one significant plot point after another while simultaneously continuing to develop its characters admirably. There’s really no lull with this show, and that’s where its magic continues to lie.

Stray Thoughts
