Ghosts Season 5, Episode 13, “St. Hetty’s Day 2: The Help” Spoilers Ahead
“St. Hetty’s Day 2: The Help” is nothing like I thought it’d be, yet everything I could’ve wished for our favorite Irish queen and her yearly visible adventures. If there’s one thing Ghosts will always be consistent on, it’s delivering compelling seasonal episodes that manage to put characters in the driver’s seat while giving them thoughtful material to work with.
We’re in for a doozy this week with the return of Ben Feldman’s Kyle, Sam’s absence for a baby shower, a temporary new relationship, and Hetty working. It’s wild, questionable at times, and a lot of fun, giving Rebecca Wisocky the kind of excellent material she’s masterful at embodying. And while our main ghost-gal is out on-camera, Rose McIver directs another brilliant episode that feels effortlessly warm in all the right ways.
“St. Hetty’s Day 2” Puts Hetty Woodstone to Work
Trevor sets up a wildly hilarious dating profile for Hetty, yet when that’s a no-go, she ends up “waitressing” at the restaurant and bonds with the staff during her 24 hours of visibility. For the ghost that’s never understood the importance of hard labor, there’s something really fascinating about how easily the desire works for Hetty, and, more importantly, how the staff starts to adore her.
It’s easy to appreciate how a woman who’s always been unloved by those around her is so easily loved on a day that’s ultimately for her. The show’s means of continuing to develop these characters by allowing beats from their past to come to light in another form is one of the most satisfying pieces of the writing because it ensures they stay in the driver’s seat at all times.
More than that, as a character, Hetty’s journey is particularly rewarding because the staff choosing her and standing beside her when her own husband didn’t are proof of the fact that she deserves the titles she carries. She deserves respect because of who she is, completely on her own, and not because of the Woodstone last name. They appreciate her because of the brief ways they got to know her, and to be respected by characters outside of the ghosts is really lovely to see.
Sas and Bela? Bela and Kyle? Give Bela a Romance 2026!
On the one hand, I’m glad Bela is finally having her ghost fantasies fulfilled with Sas, but on the other hand, I’m still super bummed about losing Joan, and also could’ve gotten behind Bela and Kyle. As a longtime fan of Ben Feldman’s rom-com chops (Hi, Jonah Simms), having him around more in the show would’ve been delightful. At the same time, the pairing could’ve actually worked because there’s something so awkward about their interactions that it’s basically catnip to me. Plus, since Bela and Sas can’t be endgame, we might get another Eric situation on our hands in the form of a second chance with Kyle. But truly, who knows? I certainly don’t, and I just want Ghosts to continue giving me all the bonkers narratives because the joy remains unparalleled.
It’s a fun twist that continues to put poor Kyle in the most awkward situations that simultaneously manage to make the episodes even more hilarious than they already are. “St. Hetty’s Day 2: The Help” is full of great guest stars, including Jeff Hiller, so it makes the episode a feast of sorts. Oddly, an episode like this would normally feel incomplete with Sam gone, but at this point, Kyle is entertaining enough to keep us intrigued for an episode or two. In addition, and maybe more than anything, it works because we have Jay engaging in totally different dynamics with both Kyle and Hetty, all while he tries to impress a highly regarded event planner at the restaurant.
The ensemble cast in this show remains so strong, and the chemistry between each of them is so refreshing that it thoughtfully ensures that each episode feels like a contained story. Ghosts Season 5, Episode 13, “St. Hetty’s Day 2: The Help” becomes another easy episode to rewatch, especially after the treat that last week’s “The List” was.
