Anna Pigeon Season 1, Episode 6, “There’s Always a Road” Spoilers Ahead
In all the ways I imagined Anna Pigeon would follow up on last week’s episode, “The Rope,” this was not even close. And to execute a believable and heartbreaking plot twist like this is a feat that most shows don’t accomplish until much later in a series.
But as the title suggests, there’s always a road. Unexpected potholes and countless secrets buried in all the places no one’s looking too closely at. There’s a lot to untangle here when it comes to how people are perceived versus how they want to be perceived, and it takes us one step closer to hopefully unveiling the truth behind Anna’s husband’s murder, too.
Anna Pigeon Episode 6 Is Ultimately Heartbreaking
There’s absolutely no part of me that could’ve predicted Bethany’s involvement in Anna’s fall, and it’s wild to think about it. It’s also a testament to Melanie Scrofano as an actress because she makes it so easy to trust her character right off the bat. And yet, as we learn, she’s been working at Jeremiah’s house, and when his nephew comes home to admit that he accidentally killed someone and that one of the rangers saw him, Bethany takes matters into her own hands.
She presents herself as so reserved and so quiet that it’s wild to think she could be capable of causing anyone pain. But really, sometimes, those are the exact people. And the episode serves as an interesting reminder of the fact that people aren’t always what they seem. It’s hard to trust people in a show like this, and it’s even harder to trust when we know that there’s so much that Anna herself has repressed about her own husband’s death.
It begs the question of whether she even knew Zach in the first place because if Manny didn’t know what Bethany was capable of under one roof, then how much do we really know about Zach? At the same time, Anna Pigeon Season 1, Episode 6, “There’s Always a Road,” is still very much a chapter that carefully focuses on exploring all the different ways people show up for each other and how far they’re willing to go to protect someone like Anna, who’s so adamant about looking out for herself.
There’s a point after an injury where you have to slow down and let people take care of you, but Anna’s not there. She’s still not willing to let people in fully, and it’s easy to understand that after everything she’s been through. It’s easy to get it, even if it’s even easier to be on the outside and know how important it is. Part of loving a character is wanting to shake them when they’re being irrational, and in this case, it’s Anna. I just want her to slow down for a second. Take a beat. Let someone take care of her for once.
It’s going to be a slow journey until she continues opening up, and ultimately, it’s natural that it’s still challenging now because we’re only in the first season. She can’t be a solitary creature of habit for too long, especially when she’s surrounded by people who not only believe her truth, but want to help her. Eventually she’s going to see that, and slowly, she’s going to let people in. But I do appreciate the fact that it isn’t immediate because that’s just not how it is in the real world. It takes time for us all to trust and build a community. And it’s especially going to take time now, knowing that someone from the inside was willing to hurt her.
