Ghosts Season 5, Episode 3, “Halloween 5: The Mummy” Spoilers Ahead
Only on a show like Ghosts could the characters discover a sercofugus that’s been inside the basement for years. At some point, Sam and Jay just need to dig through the entire house to find out what else is inside. Or, better yet, let’s keep the show going for fifty seasons. I won’t complain.
“Halloween 5: The Mummy” is about many things, but surprisingly, it’s also about love, which, interestingly, also honors last year’s “Halloween 4: The Witch.” A large part of the appeal in Ghosts is how the writers consistently utilize the silliest narratives to their advantage in order to deliver something that goes on to become undeniably poignant. And love, in all forms, is a massive part of the show’s charm, which continues to make these episodes even more precious.
But First – Ghosts Season 5, Episode 3 Focuses on Breaking Another Curse
As cheesy as it sounds, the concept of reuniting with one’s true love, breaking the mummy’s curse, makes everything about Ghosts’ fifth Halloween episode an absolute treat. Farhang Ghajar guest stars as Amunhotep, a 3,000-year-old ghost who never got the chance to move on because the Woodstones bought his sarcophagus and transported it before he could do so, leaving him tied to his mummy form. When he learns that Sam and Hetty are Woodstones, he curses them all by unleashing his Mummy form and basically doesn’t let up until he’s reunited with the lost love of his life.
It’s adorable, really, and thematically, Ghosts Season 5, Episode 3, “Halloween 5: The Mummy” does an incredible job of reiterating why love is this all-encompassing source of freedom. We see it in the interactions Pete and Alberta have, we get it through Nigel and Isaac (more in a bit), and we see it through Sam and Jay. The ghosts continuously getting the chance to right their wrongs is exactly why the series stands out as a hopeful balm in a sea of relatively sad shows. Not to mention, the sheer nostalgia that threads throughout the episode as an homage to haunted houses (and The Mummy!) in a much more nuanced way. They can try to make it scary and open to the public in order to have a normal Halloween, but if these walls could talk—well, there would be a lot to say.
To top things off, credit where credit is due, Rebecca Wisocky pulling off the accent work made me howl. It’s always such a blast when the series gives the actors room to play with their characters in a different way, and it’s always translated off-screen when they have a blast with the script they’re given.
No Seance in “Halloween 5: The Mummy” – But Nigel Learns the Truth About Chris
We may not be bringing anyone back through a seance this Halloween, but Ghosts Season 5, Episode 3, “Halloween 5: The Mummy,” brings back the mention of Chris, and also lets Isaac right his wrongs. Poor Nigel believes that they can maybe bring back Chris since he was “sucked off,” only he learns that he flew away instead, which then allows Isaac the chance to open up about why he kept the truth from him.
I say it often, but it really is so easy to appreciate it when the ghosts are given the chance to be transparent with one another, and it’s always a good look when it happens with Isaac because he’s the character whose antics are so inherently selfish. But when it comes to Nigel (and really, all of them), he’s getting better at trying to protect the man he was supposed to marry, and the fact that he did all of this because he didn’t want to hurt him again makes complete sense.
It also feels right somehow that the conversation would happen in an episode that’s essentially all about lovers finding their way back to each other. Now, I don’t know how or if or when Isaac and Nigel will be a couple again, but each of their interactions is so lovely when they’re honest with each other. It’s especially easy to appreciate how much Isaac cares despite everything that’s gone down.
Overall, while this isn’t the wildest Ghosts Halloween special, it’s surprisingly the most heartfelt. There’s something tender and admirable about highlighting love and bringing couples together, which is everything to me, personally. And the H-Money of it all, well…
