Wild Cards Season 2, Episode 11, “Bride and Doom” Spoilers Ahead
Welcome to ElliMax Chats, a column dedicated solely to highlighting Cole Ellis and Max Mitchell’s interactions during the latest episode of Wild Cards.
“The one tell that gives people away is always love.” There it is, folks—the one line that essentially cements why Max and Ellis are endgame, and why they’ll work as a couple despite all the odds stacked against them. Sometimes, the best romances are the ones that were never supposed to happen. The accidental, serendipitous meetings that effortlessly change everything. In every way, Max and Ellis are that type of invisible strings pairing. They’re the wild cards in each other’s lives.
Normally, I’d be frustrated by the fact that they haven’t spoken since their hazy kiss. But in the same way that last week’s “Our Lip (Fillers) Are Sealed” needed to happen to continue strengthening their bond, Wild Cards Season 2, Episode 11, “Bride and Doom,” is also important to continue planting seeds that fortify their loyalty to each other.
Further, it’s crucial that this line about tells comes from Max because she’s the one we need reassurance from. She’s the one who’s consistently voiced that this is all temporary. She’s doing it to atone. She’s doing it to cut time from her dad’s sentence. Despite his mountain-high trust issues, Ellis would jump at the opportunity to be with her if she simply promised that she would stay. If she simply promised that this is real. Still, though we don’t know how or when this will all happen, we can safely predict that it eventually will.
And part of safely predicting where a relationship goes relies heavily on the performances. Vanessa Morgan’s expression is so tender and honest when she states that she can tell what love is and what it isn’t. It’s also the same expression we see when she visits her father, because after he voices that they’ll be out soon and back to the way they were, it’s clear that Max doesn’t want that anymore. This job started as a ruse, but the feelings she developed for Ellis are real, deep, and unwavering. She’s not going to simply get over everything they’ve experienced by leaving.
She isn’t going to be able to forget everything they’ve experienced because what’s brewing between them isn’t fleeting. She didn’t just promise to be his cricket because she was drugged, but she did it because it was something she meant. Whether she realizes it’s love or not, Wild Cards Season 2, Episode 11, “Bride and Doom,” makes it clear that Ellis is Max’s tell. And in that sense, she’s his as well. In this line of work, they can be considered each other’s weaknesses, but that also translates to the fact that they’re each other’s strengths, too. There’s a fine line neither of them has crossed yet, and that’s because everything will change the second they do so.
Plus, episodes that lead to conversations about weddings make it abundantly clear that the audience is on the right track to potentially see some variation of one with them, too. It might not be exactly what Max has envisioned for herself, but years from now, it’ll be the very thing she needs because that’s exactly what her time with Ellis continues to be. The love brewing between them is what they both need, even while they don’t realize it.
